Newsmakers Week 2020 continued on Tuesday with three special guests joining Doug & Wolf to talk the state of their teams.
Arizona Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen, Phoenix Suns president and CEO Jason Rowley and Arizona Coyotes president and CEO Ahron Cohen dropped in to speak with 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station.
Here are some key takeaways from their on-air segments.
Mike Hazen, D-backs general manager
His message to fans after a busy offseason of surprise signings and key contract agreements with their current players:
“I want Diamondbacks fans to know that we have put every ounce of the last four months into improving our roster top to bottom: starting pitching, bullpen, position players. That’s no matter what happens in our division, no matter what else is being done around the league, in terms of clubs improving themselves, and there has been a lot of that in the National League. It’s not going to stop us.”
Jason Rowley, Suns’ president and CEO
On Larry Fitzgerald becoming minority owner of the Suns:
“Somebody that our players can relate to on a different level, somebody who gives our ownership group a level of connectivity even though he didn’t play basketball … a Devin Booker, you know, a Deandre Ayton … they can relate to Larry because Larry’s been there, he’s done that. He knows what it’s like to be in the spotlight. He knows what it’s like to have all that pressure on you and still act professionally. And that’s where I think he brings more than anything else is giving these players a role model.”
Ahron Cohen, Coyotes’ president and CEO
On whether the relocation chatter has died down thanks to a new ownership group:
“I’ll tell you this, this is a great hockey town. I think you guys know this. You go back to last season, that buzz that was created when we made that great playoff push and we were scratching and clawing. We really owned the town during that period of time. It is going to be a fun month and a half as we push for the playoffs. Everybody is so close. That’s what we are focused on. This is our home and we love it here.”
