The Arizona Diamondbacks canceled their spring training game against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday due to inclement weather.
The game at Salt River Fields was scheduled for 1:10 p.m. and right-hander Zac Gallen was set to take the mound for Arizona.
The cancellation came as MLB owners spoke with the league office on a conference call about how to handle the remainder of spring training with coronavirus concerns building. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that the expectation is spring training will be suspended.
Hard rain overwhelmed streets in metro Phoenix and the National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning Thursday morning. The flood advisory for an area in the West Valley was set to expire at noon. A flood advisory in Maricopa County was set to expire at 10:30 a.m.
The weather system, which was predicted earlier this week, moved into the Valley during the morning rush.
Heavy rain was expected in the afternoon, Phoenix weather bureau meteorologist Chris Kuhlman told KTAR News 92.3 FM.
“There might be a strong storm, maybe even a severe storm,” Kuhlman said.
