The 2019-2020 Arizona State men’s basketball season was one filled with highlights for the team and individual players, while also accomplishing things not done in decades before ultimately being cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Here is a by the numbers for the 2019-2020 ASU men’s basketball team.

The Sun Devils vaulted themselves from being questionable for the NCAA tournament to a good bet with a seven-game win streak in February. This included wins against all California schools (UCLA, USC, California, Stanford) and an upset of then-ranked No. 14 Oregon. The streak was Arizona State’s longest since the 1980-81 season when the team rolled off 11 straight victories.

The seven-game winning streak helped Arizona State achieve at least 20 wins for the third straight season. Arizona State last accomplished this when James Harden suited up in the maroon and gold from 2007 to 2010.

Point guard Remy Martin was second in the Pac-12 with 19.1 points per game, only trailing Pac-12 Player of the Year Payton Pritchard from Oregon who averaged 20.5. Martin’s efforts led him to be named to the Pac-12 First Team after making the Second Team a season ago.

Junior Alonzo Verge Jr. was named the Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year by averaging 16.8 points off the bench, a number that topped the list in NCAA Division I. This included a 43-point performance in Arizona State’s loss to Saint Mary’s on Dec. 18.

After tearing apart the Sun Devils in a 28-point victory on Jan. 4, the then-ranked No. 22 Arizona Wildcats was well on their way to sweeping the season series against their rival in Tempe on Jan. 25. The Wildcats took a 13-point advantage into halftime, but the Sun Devils came out a different team after the break. Arizona State erased the deficit and eventually won 66-65. It was the second-largest halftime deficit comeback in the Bobby Hurley era, just behind a 14-point comeback against Georgia in 2018. As a whole, the team totaled five halftime comebacks this season.

Had March Madness not been canceled, the Sun Devils figured to be a lock to make the NCAA tournament for the third season in a row. It would have been the first time since 1964 the program made three straight big dances.
