While the Arizona Cardinals have made on-paper upgrades to their roster this offseason, they’ve also made it a point to fill in the depth chart with players that have a full year’s experience under head coach Kliff Kingsbury’s regime.

That trend continued Tuesday with the team announcing that it has re-signed backup guard Max Garcia and backup safety Charles Washington on one-year contracts.

Garcia, who has 41 starts over his first four NFL seasons with the Denver Broncos, was a free agent addition last offseason.

He was coming off a torn ACL in November 2018 and entered 2019 on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list before being activated last November.

Garcia will provide experience behind projected starting guards Justin Pugh and J.R. Sweezy. His value is of greater importance if fellow reserve guard Mason Cole becomes the Cardinals’ starting center — veteran center A.Q. Shipley remains a free agent.

Washington appeared in 12 games with Arizona last year, tallying seven special teams tackles. He was a waiver-wire pickup by the Cardinals in September 2019.

Arizona was busy in the first week of this offseason locking in projected starters including RB Kenyan Drake, WR DeAndre Hopkins, OLB Devon Kennard, ILB De’Vondre Campbell and DT Jordan Phillips.

As the second week of free agency approached, the Cardinals have since re-signed backup quarterback Brett Hundley, defensive lineman Jonathan Bullard and backup safety Chris Banjo before the latest re-signings of Garcia and Washington.
