Former Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Mark Reynolds announced Thursday that he is officially retiring.
“I’ve retired,” he told SiriusXM MLB Network Radio. “With all that’s going on and with everything, I’ve been really enjoying time with the family. It’s time for me to move on and find something else to do.”
Reynolds last played for the Colorado Rockies, appearing in 78 games in 2019 before being released on July 26. He has been a free agent since then.
The 36-year-old was a 16th-round pick by the Diamondbacks in 2004 out of the University of Virginia. He debuted in 2007 and played four seasons with Arizona, hitting 121 home runs in that span. He also led the major leagues in strikeouts in each of his last three years with the D-backs.
But his high strikeout numbers were the tradeoff for his power, as he hit a career-high 44 home runs in 2009 and finished 20th in MVP voting. He had 76 home runs in his final two seasons in the desert and had 199 RBI combined from 2008 to 2009.
The D-backs eventually traded Reynolds to the Baltimore Orioles in the 2010-11 offseason for relievers David Hernandez and Kam Mickolio.
Reynolds stayed in Baltimore for two seasons and then had stints with Cleveland, the New York Yankees, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Colorado and Washington. He had 298 career home runs and hit .236 with a .780 OPS. He struck out the ninth-most times in major league history.
