The University of Arizona’s athletic department is freezing all spending after a $7.5 million projected shortfall for the current fiscal year that wraps up in June due to COVID-19, per USA TODAY Sports’ Dan Wolken.

In a memo obtained by Wolken, all hirings and raises are frozen as well. Athletic director Dave Heeke’s memo sent to coaches and staffers suggested there could be pay cuts coming, as well as expenses potentially being cut for the next fiscal year.

Heeke was optimistic in the memo that an extension on a deadline for season tickets would help.

“I want to be clear, the overall shortfall in revenue could be much more,” Heeke wrote. “While we all want answers, there is still so much that is uncertain with this worldwide crisis and its short and long-term impacts.”

The NCAA canceled all remaining winter and spring athletics due to the coronavirus, including the Pac-12 and NCAA Tournament for Arizona’s men’s basketball program.
