Cleveland Browns get back to basics with release of new (old) uniforms

The Cleveland Browns on Wednesday released new uniforms. Kind of.
The team joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons in unveiling new uniforms this NFL offseason, but while the Browns’ new threads got a fresh update, it gives a significant nod to the familiarity of Browns uniforms of the past.

“We wanted to get back to the roots of who the Browns are,” team owner J.W. Johnson said via the team website. “We’ve heard it from our fans and from our players. We needed to get back to our roots.
“As you look at iconic franchises like the Browns, the Bears, the Packers, the Cowboys — they’re true to who they are. They’re not doing a lot of changes and trying to make a lot of flashy moves with their uniforms. I think when we went through the process, it just felt right that we got back to who we are and who we’ll always be.”

The new uniform set includes a few different variations. There’s a white jersey with brown lettering, a brown jersey with white lettering, and a brown jersey with orange lettering. There’s also both white pants and brown pants. The uniforms are very similar to those of the Browns in 2008, with the white jersey’s font, sleeve stripe patterns and helmet design all being brought back.
It’s a change from the uniforms that they’d worn since 2015, when the uniforms debuted a “Browns” team nameplate on the front of the jersey and other slight differences, such as the stitching on the jersey and the stripes on the sleeves.
