Keim: Kingsbury’s ‘palatial estate’ can recruit undrafted players to Cardinals

Kliff Kingsbury isn’t one to brag.

On Friday after Day 2 of the NFL Draft, the Arizona Cardinals head coach ducked a question about the social media reaction to a picture of his home remote setup.

You probably saw the picture tweeted by the Cardinals’ team account: Kingsbury, relaxed in a sofa with three cell phones in front of him, watched the TV intently. It was the posh backyard, fire pit and Camelback Mountain in the background that wowed NFL fans.

But Cardinals general manager Steve Keim made sure to kid his head coach about the hot topic in the team’s last draft call with reporters on Saturday.

Just after the draft ended, Keim was ready to hit the phone lines hard and recruit undrafted free agents to Arizona.

“Coach has been using FaceTime and showing them his palatial estate and trying to recruit them that way, so that should help,” Keim said.

Arguably, Kingsbury’s home was the biggest non-football related story of the draft.

Also in the conversation for that title: Patriots coach Bill Belichick’s dog drafting from the laptop set out before him, Titans coach Mike Vrabel’s weird family and Texans coach Bill O’Brien losing it — he said it was just some Zoom fun — on national TV.

Anyway, Kingsbury didn’t seem interested in speaking about his super swaggy home that made headlines.

“I’ve had some friends obviously hit me up,” he said on Friday night. “But it’s a unique situation to be able to do it from home and have fun with it, give some quality content and just enjoy the process.”

Quality content, indeed.

We do understand now why he was so worried about losing his job midway through his first game as an NFL head coach.

“I remember thinking, ‘I cannot believe I spent that much on a house, I’m screwed on this deal because this is going to be a short stay and I don’t know what we’re going to do,’” Kingsbury said on Ryen Rusillo’s podcast in February.
