Players comfortable enough to compete in the Scottsdale AZ Open are expected to tee off as scheduled amid the coronavirus outbreak that has postponed other major golfing events like the PGA Tour.
The Desert Financial Credit Union-sponsored open at Talking Stick Golf Club will take place May 11-14, though refunds will be accepted through May 1 for players who want to pull out.
“Multiple health officials across the country as well as the Arizona State Governor’s Office have stated, with the right precautions, golf can be a safe activity,” said a press release on the event’s website. “Based on current information a decision has been made to proceed with the Scottsdale AZ Open as scheduled, May 11-14, 2020 at Talking Stick Golf Club.
“We are grateful for your participation, and appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate through this unique situation. We will continue to listen to the experts, follow CDC guidelines and implement safety measures as necessary.”
A non-PGA pro golf event, the Scottsdale AZ Open isn’t the only golfing event that has commenced.
Tony Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, is participating this week in the Maridoe Samaritan Fund Invitational, a caddy-less event, according to ESPN.
The state of Arizona has not shuttered its golf courses since the spread of coronavirus began. Other states that have could be eyeing reopening soon.
Washington, which was one of the earliest states to have a positive test for coronavirus, is expected to open recreational golf courses on May 5, Gov. Jay Inslee said.
