Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Starling Marte’s wife Noelia passed away due to a heart attack, Marte announced on social media Monday.

“I go through the pain of making public the unfortunate death of my wife Noelia, due to a heart attack,” Marte posted. “It is a moment of great sorrow.”

The Diamondbacks released a statement on the news.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Noelia Marte. Starling and his family are part of the D-backs’ family and we will do all we can to support him and their children during this incredibly difficult time.

Per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, Noelia had broken her ankle and was awaiting surgery when she had the heart attack.

Marte was acquired by the D-backs in late January from the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 31-year-old hit .295 with 23 home runs and a career-high 82 RBIs last season.
