The Arizona Cardinals have signed former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver Dylan Cantrell, the team announced Monday. In the release, the Cardinals listed him as a tight end.

Arizona also waived cornerback Sojourn Shelton.

Cantrell, 25, has never appeared in an NFL game. The Bolts drafted him in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft out of Texas Tech, where he played for head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

As a fifth-year senior in 2017, Cantrell had 816 receiving yards and seven touchdowns for the Red Raiders. He had 158 catches in 40 games as a college player.

Since then, Cantrell has bounced back and forth between free agency and the Chargers’ practice squad. He was placed on IR in July of last year with a shoulder injury.

If he continues as a tight end, Cantrell joins Maxx Williams, Dan Arnold and Darrell Daniels, who all return from 2019. As a wide receiver, Cantrell could add depth to a Cardinals wide receiver room that saw Damiere Byrd and Pharoh Cooper walk in free agency, signing with the Patriots and Panthers, respectively.

Arizona did not draft a wide receiver or tight end in the 2020 class.
