Phoenix Rising FC announced Monday that it will ramp up full-contact practices Wednesday in preparation to begin USL Championship play on July 11.

“The USL Championship Task Force, in conjunction with an affirmative vote by the league’s Board of Governors, announced today the current training moratorium will be lifted, effective Wednesday, June 24, paving the way for a return to full-squad training,” the USL said in a statement. “Clubs may not start contact training until June 24 and must have approval from local and state health authorities and USL HQ.”

Phoenix Rising FC has been taking part in restricted group training sessions since May 11 to prevent the spread of coronavirus among team members.

On June 9, the USL pulled back restrictions on the group training sessions, allowing up to 10 players instead of a maximum of four to take part in non-contact workouts. Weight rooms also opened at that time.

In Arizona, coronavirus cases have continued to rise.

The Arizona health department reported 2,196 new coronavirus cases and three additional deaths Monday morning. The department reported more than 2,000 new cases in a day for the first time on June 16, and the daily number has been below that mark just once since then, twice eclipsing 3,000.

Arizona’s known coronavirus case total increased to 54,586 with 1,342 deaths.
