Arizona State sophomore running back A.J. Carter has entered the transfer portal, reported SunDevilSource.com on Tuesday.
Carter took 19 carries for 50 yards (2.7 yards per carry) as a freshman last season. He had an opportunity to be the lead back in the Sun Devils’ Sun Bowl win over Florida State — starter Eno Benjamin sat out to protect himself for the NFL Draft — but Carter only carried the ball four times for 12 yards while fumbling twice.
For the year, Carter fumbled three times last season.
His departure isn’t surprising considering ASU has two high-profile recruits entering the program.
Backs Daniyel Ngata and DeaMonte Trayanum represent two of ASU’s trio of five-star prospects who are part of the 2020 recruiting class. They and junior college transfer Rachaad White could compete with returnee Demetrious Flowers for playing time.
Ngata and Trayanum have already been part of the program as it started spring practices before coronavirus suspended workouts, according to SunDevilSource.com.
Carter was a three-star prospect in the 2018 recruiting class.
