WNBA: 7 test positive for coronavirus as Mercury, others arrive in Florida

Jul 6, 2020, 8:42 AM | Updated: 2:37 pm

The WNBA announced Monday that seven of 137 players tested for coronavirus have positive results.

Those positive results were found between a testing period spanning June 28 through July 5.

They will remain in self-isolation until they have satisfied public health protocols and are cleared by doctors.

Eleven of the WNBA’s 12 teams will arrive in Bradenton, Fla., on Monday for the start of the 2020 season. That includes the Phoenix Mercury.

Leading up to the training camp move to Florida, the Mercury have been taking part in individual workouts at the shared temporary home with the NBA’s Phoenix Suns, Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum, as Talking Stick Resort Arena undergoes renovations.

The WNBA said the Indiana Fever are the only team not traveling Monday as planned “due to the CDC’s close contact self-quarantine requirements.” They will delay the trip by five days, the league said.

Teams will gather at IMG Academy in Bradenton for their 22-game regular seasons that start July 24. The schedules have yet to be released.

Prior to the coronavirus-paused season, the WNBA planned to tip off its regular season on May 15 and the season was to be an expanded 36-game schedule for each squad.
