Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo was ejected for arguing a call in the fifth inning of the game Sunday against the San Diego Padres.

With one out, designated hitter Kevin Cron got hit by pitch in the elbow. The umpire ruled that Cron stuck his elbow out and did not make an attempt to get out of the way of the pitch.

Lovullo came out to talk to the umpire. After a minute or so of arguing, he was ejected.

“He explained to me that Kevin leaned into the ball and kind of exposed his elbow and threw his elbow out in front of the baseball,” Lovullo said.

“I told him if it was going to be a strike I could have lived with that a little bit more, but I said because it was going to be a ball … I felt like he had a right to a certain point, certain spot in the batter’s box.”

This is Lovullo’s fifth ejection as the manager of the D-backs.

Interestingly enough, this ejection was different than the other four due to coronavirus cautions mandated by the league.

Lovullo said he tried to keep the social distancing rules in mind as he argued.

“I asked the umpire to make sure that he stayed away from me. That was the most important thing for me,” Lovullo said. “I just remember my mask riding up on my face and it was making me a little uncomfortable, and I felt like it was my responsibility to cover my face up.”

The D-backs were down 1-0 at the time of the ejection.

They came back to win 4-3 with all four Arizona runs scored in the eighth and ninth innings.
