The Arizona Diamondbacks are calling up prospect Daulton Varsho to the active roster, Arizona Sports’ John Gambadoro has learned.
Gambadoro adds the Varsho move corresponds with the team sending Kevin Cron to the alternate site at Salt River Fields.
Varsho, who spends time at catcher but also can play in the outfield, is ranked as the D-backs’ No. 3 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.
“[Varsho] is certainly one of our top prospects, but there would have been every guess that somebody could make that he was going to impact our major league roster this year, and I don’t see why that won’t be the case in a shortened window,” D-backs GM Mike Hazen told The D-backs BP Show back on July 1.
Cron, who had played at first base and as a DH, heads to Salt River Fields after playing in two games so far this season. He’s struck out twice and has been walked once in five plate appearances.
Last season, Cron averaged .211 with 16 RBIs, six home runs and 12 runs scored in 39 games played.
It’s been a rough start to the D-backs’ season offensively, with the team batting .202. Arizona’s .554 OPS is second-to-last in the MLB, and their runs scored (17) is 27th in the league.
The D-backs are hoping Varsho, who put up 18 homers, 58 RBIs and averaged .301 in 2019 with the Double-A Jackson Generals, can help turn the trend.
