TORONTO, ONTARIO - AUGUST 03: Linesman Devin Berg #87 separates Tony DeAngelo #77 of the New York Rangers and Jordan Martinook #48 of the Carolina Hurricanes in Game Two of the Eastern Conference Qualification Round prior to the 2020 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs at Scotiabank Arena on August 3, 2020 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Jordan Martinook and Tony DeAngelo were teammates — albeit for a brief time — with the Arizona Coyotes in 2016-17.

That year was DeAngelo’s first in the NHL and the second full year for Martinook, who since have each gone on to greener pastures. Martinook, now a key cog in the Carolina Hurricanes’ postseason squad, and DeAngelo, one of the NHL’s top scoring defensemen this season, seem to not have built much relationship equity in their brief time together in Arizona.

They looked like old rivals on Monday.

Late in a game in which Carolina was leading 4-1 and youngster Andrei Svechnikov had a hat trick, DeAngelo and Martinook got into a bout that seemed to be the boiling-over of the Rangers’ frustration. In particular, DeAngelo was a tough minus-2 on the day.

The Rangers, by the way, now trail the series 2-0. The Hurricanes need only one more win to advance.

“We’re getting frustrated. There’s no easy ice out there,” Rangers head coach David Quinn said after the game. “And we’ve got to understand that and we’ve got to be consistently trying to earn our ice. They do a good job taking it away. I give them credit, you never want to take credit away from an opponent, but I know we can better. And we have to be better in a hurry.”

On the fight, DeAngelo was assessed 14 minutes worth of penalties: four minutes for roughing and a 10 minute misconduct. Martinook was merely given two minutes for roughing. DeAngelo was seen shouting something as he went down the tunnel, and it was likely something not repeatable here.

Plus, Martinook had a goal in the game, which was the direct result of a turnover from DeAngelo. It’s safe to say that Martinook had a better day than his old teammate.
