The Arizona Diamondbacks traded the versatile Ildemaro Vargas to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for cash considerations, the Twins announced.

The move comes after he was designated for assignment on Thursday.

Vargas was a much-talked-about player from the team’s summer camp at Chase Field this year, a time when players showed off their improvements from the offseason following a coronavirus-caused hiatus.

“It’s hard not to notice Vargas right now,” shortstop Nick Ahmed told reporters in July. “He’s hitting everything on the barrel and he’s hit four or five home runs, four or five doubles, and even his outs seem to be hard line drives to the center fielder. He’s swinging the bat really well.”

The Venezuela native has played games in four different seasons for the Diamondbacks at the major league level but has never grabbed more than a couple dozen plate appearances in a season outside of a heftier 2019 workload (92 games, 201 at bats). For his career, he’s hitting .257 in 253 at bats at the major league level.

The 29-year-old has appeared at every position except catcher, pitcher and center fielder in the major leagues. This year alone, he’s taken innings at first, second and third.
