After losing nine of the last 10 games heading into Sunday, the Arizona Diamondbacks are open to trading away some prominent players, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
The D-backs are willing to trade closer Archie Bradley and center fielder Starling Marte, Rosenthal tweeted.
Both players have one more year of team control. Bradley has one year left of arbitration, and Marte has a $12.5 million team option next season.
Of D-backs players, Marte is “drawing the most interest” from other teams, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale.
The New York Yankees are among teams who have reached out to Arizona about Marte, according to the New York Post.
Acquired from the Pittsburgh Pirates in January, Marte has hit .322 with two home runs, 14 RBIs and eight doubles going into Sunday.
Bradley has been good overall in his first full year as Diamondbacks closer, keeping the opponent scoreless in seven of his nine appearances and picking up six saves.
It was just 10 days ago that the D-backs were in contention coming on the heels of a six-game win streak. At that time, they were above .500, and president and CEO Derrick Hall told Arizona Sports 98.7 FM that the D-backs were buyers.
He did qualify that with “a lot can change” over the following week.
A lot did change. The D-backs have had a tumultuous month: Their record was 3-8 on Aug. 4, 13-11 on Aug. 18, and now 14-20 the day before the trade deadline.
Nightengale tweeted that “virtually everyone is available,” naming outfielder David Peralta as a player who has “intrigued” other teams. He also reported that interest in left-handed pitcher Robbie Ray has waned as he continues to struggle, with an ERA of 7.84 and a WHIP at 2.000
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said general manager Mike Hazen doesn’t update him on the trade talk that may be occurring in the front office, but said that Sunday “will bring on that conversation.”
“I think anything’s a possibility no matter what your record is,” he said. “I think (the front office is) always mindful of pushing us in the right direction for today and tomorrow and beyond that.”
