Cardinals’ Hopkins, The Roots make next hit song on ‘The Tonight Show’

Sep 11, 2020, 8:46 AM

Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was “grateful” Thursday night.

No, it wasn’t because he’s no longer on the Houston Texans or that he got a big payday in his new home.

Hopkins was grateful for an entirely different reason: He was on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon.

Joining the show virtually for the NFL Edition of Freestylin’ with The Roots, Hopkins provided some inspiration, if you will, for “The Tonight Show” band.

Fallon asked Hopkins two fan-based questions.

The first one was, “What do you miss the most about the fans?”

“What I’ll miss most about the fans is the other team getting a penalty because the fans are too loud,” Hopkins answered.

The second question focused on what he wanted to say to his fans.

“I know the Arizona Cardinals fans have been waiting to see this new offense,” Hopkins said. “They’ll see it soon. Make sure y’all tune in on Sunday against San Fran.”

From there, musical excellence ensued.

Putting the All-Pro wideout’s words to paper, The Roots quickly came up with a freestyle in honor of Hopkins and the fans.

“They call me DeAndre but it’s not DH. If you’ve got an NFL deal, I’ll negotiate,” The Roots sang. “And the season will keep safe despite the circumstance, but I miss those penalties from those crazy fans.

“We came such a long way, from Clemson, my hometown. If there’s one thing I could say, check this offense out. If there’s one thing I could say check this offense out.”

We aren’t music experts by any means but could see the hit landing on the Billboard top hits by month’s end.
