D.J. Foster was not on the Arizona Cardinals’ practice squad for long.

On Saturday, the Cardinals announced they elevated the running back to the active roster ahead of the first game of the season.

Foster has been with the Cardinals since 2017. He appeared in seven games that season, his second in the league, but tore his MCL and ACL in the 2018 preseason and missed that full year. He played in six games last year.

Over his two seasons of action for the Cardinals, Foster has 19 rushing yards on six carries and 133 receiving yards off 17 receptions.

Foster was initially one of the final cuts for the Cardinals’ 53-man roster on Sept. 5. He was signed to the practice squad the next day.

His activation appears to be a “standard elevation” that ESPN’s Field Yates tweeted about. According to Yates, 31 players were activated off the practice squad Saturday but will be sent back without going through waivers after this week’s slate of games as a part of the NFL’s roster flexibility in 2020.

The former ASU running back will presumably slot in as the No. 4 running back on the depth chart behind Kenyan Drake, Chase Edmonds and rookie Eno Benjamin.

The Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers are scheduled to kickoff for Week 1 action at 1:25 p.m. on Sunday.
