Arizona Diamondbacks right-handed pitcher Zac Gallen has been having some discomfort in the fingernail on his right middle finger, manager Torey Lovullo said in a Zoom press conference Sunday.

Lovullo did not express concern, saying pitchers battle those types of conditions relatively frequently.

He said he noticed Gallen looking at his finger a couple times during the outing against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday in which the pitcher was charged with seven earned runs in five innings.

Gallen told Lovullo the finger did not have much impact on his performance.

“He said it was minimal reason for the outing,” Lovullo said.

Gallen was one of the best pitchers in the majors through his first eight starts of the season, allowing two runs or fewer in each game and posting an ERA of 1.80.

In the two starts since, though, he has allowed more total runs than he did over his first eight combined. Gallen gave up a combined 11 earned runs in his two games last week.

“We’ll check in with him today, see how he’s feeling,” Lovullo said.

First pitch for the D-backs’ game against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday is at 1:10 p.m. Tune to 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station to listen live.
