The Arizona Diamondbacks have agreed to a minor league contract with right-handed pitcher Micah Owings and invited him to Spring Training as a non-roster invitee.

Owings, 28, has been with the Cincinnati Reds for the past two seasons since the Diamondbacks traded him to the club for Adam Dunn and cash considerations in 2008. He posted a 3-2 record with a 5.40 ERA, 25 walks and 35 strikeouts in 22 relief appearances last season in the majors. He also posted a 2.21 ERA with 10 walks and 13 strikeouts in eight games for Triple-A Louisville.

“His experience was a real positive one here in Arizona. Micah will certainly be pitching in more of probably a relief role here, but will also maybe even get some time at first base,” said D-backs’ Executive Vice President and General Manager Kevin Towers.

Owings has a 24-31 record with a 5.11 ERA, 180 walks and 296 strikeouts in 99 career games over four Major League seasons (64 starts). In 35 career relief appearances he has a 4-3 record with a 4.99 ERA, 42 walks and 50 strikeouts.

As a Diamondback Owings won a Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award after batting .333 (20-for-60) with seven doubles, one triple, four home runs and 15 RBI in 2007. The club named him their Organizational Pitcher of the Year in his first professional season in 2006 after drafting him out of Tulane University.
