D-backs discuss new spring training home

Following their first practice of spring training Monday, several Diamondbacks players said they were pleased with their new spring home in Scottsdale.

This is the Diamondbacks first season at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick after leaving their long-time spring training location in Tucson after the 2010 season.

“Tucson was nice as well but obviously to be here and it’s kind of second to none, you really can’t complain being a player or anyone around here,” Diamondbacks pitcher Barry Enright said.

“They are pretty amazing facilities, it’s easy to try and get around and we enjoy being here.”

The facility includes 12 practice fields, an 11,000 seat stadium and cost around $100 million. Salt River Fields will house both the Diamondbacks and the Colorado Rockies.

Pitcher Ian Kennedy said the complex is “amazing” and manager Kirk Gibson said there is a clear difference between Tucson and Salt River Fields.

“(It’s) way different, it’s beautiful. It’s amazing, the people who put it together should be commended,” Gibson said.

The complex also features an area where players can interact with fans and sign autographs following practice.

“They did a great job with this place, they’ve definitely got all the fields we need and I think it’s great how the fans can interact with us on a more intimate basis,” reliever J.J. Putz said.

“I really like what Gibby (Gibson) has us do after we’re done with workouts, meet with fans and sign some autographs on our way out. I think it definitely builds the relationship with the fan base.”
