Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Andy Young suffered a season-ending injury while playing at the Alternate Training Site, manager Torey Lovullo said Friday.

Young got hit by pitch this week and had surgery to remove his right hamate bone, which is on the outside of the wrist by the pinky finger.

He will be out for the remainder of the year. Lovullo expressed confidence that Young will be ready for spring training.

Young, in his first season with a major league appearance, had five hits in 26 at-bats over the 12 games he played in. He finished the year with one home run and four RBIs.

Ketel Marte

The D-backs may get their star back for the final few games of the season.

Second baseman Ketel Marte had a scheduled hitting recovery day Friday, during which he focused on fielding and running.

On Saturday, he will take batting practice off coach pitch for the first time since going to the injured list with wrist inflammation, Lovullo said.

There is belief Marte can return next week.

“Up to this point, with every conversation that I’ve had with him, he’s real encouraged by how he’s feeling so I’m very optimistic that he’ll be able to get back on the field before the season’s over,” Lovullo said.

Taylor Widener

Taylor Widener, who was placed on the 10-day IL on Sept. 1 with a strained right rib cage, threw a 31-pitch sim game on Wednesday.

Lovullo said the pitcher is continuing to throw long toss as he rests from that outing.

In 10 relief appearances this season, Widener has a 4.42 ERA over 18.1 innings pitched.
