The Arizona Diamondbacks announced the passing of Professional Baseball Scouts Hall of Fame member Gary Hughes at 79 years old.

Hughes was a member of the D-backs organization for two seasons to end a 54-year career, including a stint as assistant general manager with the Florida Marlins. He was also the scouting director for a period with the Montreal Expos.

“Gary’s impact on the game of baseball was exceeded only by the number of friends he made throughout it,” the team said in a release.

Hughes’ time in the MLB included stints with 11 different MLB teams and the scouting of John Elway and John Lynch before they both switched to football.

“More than anything, he was a tremendous person, a great storyteller and a friend to everyone whose path he crossed. He will be missed by so many and our thoughts are with his family including his sons, Sam and ‘Rock,’ who carry on his legacy in the game,” the team said.
