Arizona Diamondbacks infielder Eduardo Escobar won his second-straight Luis Gonzalez Award on Friday.

Escobar, who is hitting .204 with four home runs and 18 RBIs this season, is the latest winner of the award, which goes to the D-backs player that uses his talents the most, on and off the diamond.

The award, which has been given out for six years, is named after franchise cornerstone, Luis Gonzalez.

Gonzalez played outfield for the Diamondbacks from 1999-2006, famously hitting the walk-off single in game seven of the 2001 World Series to win the franchise its lone championship.

The former Diamondback player, who currently serves as the senior advisor to the president & CEO of the club, praised Escobar for his tireless work ethic during a challenging season.

“During an extremely challenging year, Eduardo never stopped giving back and finding ways to inspire his teammates,” Gonzalez said in a press release. “This year he focused his efforts on frontline workers battling the pandemic and still found time to visit students and teachers virtually to help those whose education has been completely altered. He continues to step up for Arizona and is a great example to others.”

Escobar joins former D-backs first baseman Paul Goldschmidt as the only player to win the award more than once. Goldschmidt won it three times, in 2015, 2017 and 2018.

The franchise highlighted Escobar’s work to promote education, both in the Valley and in his native Venezuela.

Escobar and the Diamondbacks finish the regular season this weekend, with home games against the Colorado Rockies from tonight through Sunday.
