Inside the Box: D-back pitching shelled again

Apr 14, 2011, 4:04 AM | Updated: 5:21 am

After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and provide you with instant analysis. So it’s
time to go Inside the Box for April 13, 2011: Cardinals 15, Diamondbacks 5

The Diamondbacks’ pitching got hammered again on Wednesday night in the St. Louis Cardinals 15-5 win over Arizona.

Starter Ian Kennedy didn’t last long giving up nine runs in three innings pitched.

Aaron Heilman didn’t fare any better as Kennedy’s relief as he gave up six runs in 1 2/3 innings.

Arizona has now given six or more runs in their last five games.

Somehow, the team managed to win two of those games, but the D-back offense won’t be able to bail out the pitching for much longer.

Arizona’s team ERA to start the season is 5.06 ranking them 26th in team pitching in MLB.

Pitching is the most crucial element of baseball and teams that rank near the bottom of the league in that department tend to have a long season and a lot of long games.

The Diamondbacks’ starters aren’t going very deep into games and it won’t be long before the bullpen gets worn out at this rate from having to work so many innings.

The bullpen has shown improvement with David Hernandez and J.J. Putz looking solid early on, but the rest of the staff needs to pick it up or the team will start free falling in the standings.
