Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said he believed the umpire who ejected him from a game against the Cardinals last week may have been baiting his catcher.
Gibson was tossed after a heated exchange with umpire Bob Davidson when he ruled catcher Miguel Montero had gone around on a checked swing.
He said in the first inning, Davidson made a similar call even though he felt Montero checked his swing. Montero argued the call but Gibson escorted his catcher back to the dugout to prevent him from being thrown out.
Before the third inning, Gibson said Montero was catching warm up pitches when Davidson began talking to him.
“I felt like maybe he was trying to bait my catcher and that kind of spurred my curiosity of what was going on there. Then, when it happened the next time he checked his swing again, and I don’t know if you realize this, but he took a ball and chucked it over to our dugout. From that point on, I reacted to the situation,” the manager said.
“We had a nice conversation there, I lost my voice in 20 seconds but we won so it was great.”
