time to go Inside the Box for May 3, 2011: Diamondbacks 4, Rockies 3
The Arizona Diamondbacks started their 14-game stretch against the NL West with a thrilling 4-3 win over the Colorado Rockies.
Justin Upton’s go-ahead homer in the eighth inning was the difference in the game.
Starter Joe Saunders showed great improvement going six innings and only giving up three runs against a powerful Colorado offense.
The bullpen trio of Esmerling Vazquez, David Hernandez and J.J. Putz didn’t allow any runs in three innings pitched in relief of Saunders.
Putz is now 7-for-7 in save opportunities this season.
Backup catcher Henry Blanco got a rare start and rewarded manager Kirk Gibson getting two hits including a home run in the third inning.
Blanco was hitless for the season coming into the game.
The only real negative for Arizona was they struggled once again with runners in scoring position only going 1-for-7.
