Arizona State football has four of their five captains for the 2020 season as first-timers in the role, including sophomore quarterback Jayden Daniels.
Joining Daniels are senior wide receiver Frank Darby, sophomore fullback Case Hatch and junior linebacker Kyle Soelle as new captains. Returning for his second year as captain is junior linebacker Darien Butler.
Daniels has big expectations after a strong true freshman campaign built some well-deserved hype. He threw for 2,478 yards, 17 touchdowns and two interceptions, earning an honorable mention for Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year.
Darby becomes to second ASU wideout to replace a first-round pick in back-to-back years after N’Keal Harry went to the New England Patriots in 2019 and Brandon Aiyuk joined the San Francisco 49ers this season. Darby was second on the team in receiving yards last year with 616, averaging a team-high 19.9 yards per catch. Over three seasons and 61 receptions, Darby has posted 20.8 yards per catch.
Butler had 88 total tackles last year for the Sun Devils, six for loss.
Hatch is a name worth mentioning, as he joined the program was a freshman walk-on linebacker and transitioned to fullback, earning a scholarship at the end of the team’s season.
Soelle was described by linebackers coach Antonio Pierce to Maroon Monsoon on Arizona Sports as a “core guy” for the team after 34 total tackles through his first two seasons.
