Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury ruled linebacker Devon Kennard out of Arizona’s Week 5 game against the New York Jets with a calf injury, while defensive tackle Jordan Phillips (illness) will make the trip and is considered day-to-day.

Before the official team injury reports were released, Kingsbury said Kennard would not travel as Arizona prepared to leave Friday to face the Jets.

“He’s such a tough player in the run game and the pass game, too,” Cardinals defensive coordinator Vance Joseph said Thursday. “Guys who were playing for him have to do it right, have to do it with toughness and do it within the system and make plays for us. He played really, really well for the first few weeks for us.”

Arizona safety Chris Banjo, who earned the limited designation Thursday and Friday, has yet to the see the playing field after exiting the team’s Week 3 matchup against the Detroit Lions with a hamstring injury. He is listed as questionable to play.

If Banjo can’t play, then second-year man Deionte Thompson will make his second straight start opposite safety Budda Baker, who will play after missing last week due to thumb surgery recovery.

Phillips was added to the report on Thursday due to an illness.

Kennard and tight end Darrell Daniels (thigh) remained out for the first two formal practices while cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick (calf) was limited for the second straight day. Daniels returned to the field Friday and was resting due to minor issues, Kingsbury said Friday.

Cardinals running back Kenyan Drake and offensive lineman Justin Pugh, two players who exited the Week 4 loss to the Carolina Panthers with injuries, practiced fully.

As for the Jets, quarterback Sam Darnold is expected to miss Sunday’s matchup with a right shoulder injury, paving the way for 13-year veteran Joe Flacco. Wide receiver Breshad Perriman and offensive lineman Mekhi Becton also have not practiced, though New York’s injury report for Friday is predicted as the team was sent home amid a presumptive positive coronavirus test.
