PHOENIX – One of the most valuable players for the Arizona Diamondbacks almost wasn’t even on the team to start the season.
Utility man Ryan Roberts was expected to be sent down to Triple-A, but an injury to Geoff Blum allowed Roberts to break camp with the big club.
Roberts has made sure to make the most of his opportunity.
“He brings fire and enthusiasm to the team. That kind of passion we need in this club,” said D-backs third base coach Matt Williams on the Sports 620 KTAR’s Doug and Wolf show.
Aside from the vastly improved bullpen, Roberts has been the story of the season thus far for Arizona.
Roberts is hitting a respectable .278, but seems to get the big hit in many games that propels the team to victory.
However, his real value shows up in his versatility and drive.
“He’s eager to play and compete every day. We’ve asked him to play multiple positions. He makes for a valuable member of the team,” said Williams.
