One week after testing positive for the coronavirus, Arizona Wildcats head football coach Kevin Sumlin was back among his players and staff Monday.

Sumlin was tested around the first of the month for the virus and received a positive test result ahead of the team ramping up activities with a Nov. 7 start date in mind.

When talking with the media during the Pac-12’s coaches webinar on Oct. 7, Sumlin said he nor his son showed any symptoms of the virus while quarantining in their Tucson home.

“I still don’t know how or why or what happened but the lesson is this thing is serious,” Sumlin said Oct. 7. “No matter what precautions you have, you have to be extremely aggressive about your protection about your health as well as others.

“It’s an unfortunate situation … but I’m not the only one it’s happened to even though I’ve been really vigilant about what’s happened. … You cannot be too careful. You just can’t.”

Sumlin missed the first of two fall practices while in quarantine. Offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone and defensive coordinator Paul Rhoads ran things in his absence.

The Wildcats open up the season against the Utah Utes on Nov. 7.
