Inside the Box: Kennedy struggles in D-backs loss

After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and provide you with instant analysis. So it’s
time to go Inside the Box for May 31, 2011: Marlins 5, Diamondbacks 2

The Arizona Diamondbacks’ seven-game winning streak came to an end in the team’s 5-2 defeat to the Florida Marlins on Tuesday.

Probably most surprising was that the streak ended with the D-backs ace Ian Kennedy on the mound who didn’t have his best stuff.

Kennedy gave up three runs in only five innings pitched as he struggled with his command.

The D-backs right-hander issued three walks, hit a batter and threw two wild pitches.

Logan Morrison and Gaby Sanchez hit home runs off Kennedy and Florida was able to tack on two runs off the Arizona bullpen.

Marlins’ starter Anibal Sanchez was dominant limiting the D-backs to only two runs in eight innings.

Sanchez also drove in two runs with his bat on groundouts.

Offensively for Arizona, Justin Upton and Kelly Johnson hit solo home runs, but that was about all they could muster up against Sanchez.

Arizona(30-25) was able to maintain its half game lead in the NL West with the Giants loss and will conclude their series against Florida Wednesday night.
