After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and provide you with instant analysis. So it’s
time to go Inside the Box for June 8, 2011: Pirates 3, Diamondbacks 2
The Good:
Starter Zach Duke turned in a solid performance against his former team going seven innings only giving up one run.
It was only Duke’s third start of the season and two of them have produced good results.
Stephen Drew, who didn’t even start the game, had a couple of clutch RBI hits in the game.
The first one came in the eighth inning that tied the game and the other came in the 10th inning giving the D-backs a short-lived lead.
The Bad:
Arizona took the lead in the 10th inning, but couldn’t close it out as J.J. Putz blew the save allowing Pittsburgh to prolong the game where they eventually won in the 11th inning.
It was only Putz’s second blown save for the season.
The Ugly:
The D-backs had a golden chance to score in the 11th inning but couldn’t get the job done.
Arizona had runners on first and third with nobody out, but Ryan Roberts struck out and then Kelly Johnson hit into a double play ending the Arizona threat.
