Inside the Box: Saunders struggles in D-backs loss

After every Arizona Diamondbacks game we’ll examine the
box score and provide you with instant analysis. So it’s
time to go Inside the Box for June 10, 2011: Marlins 6, Diamondbacks 4

The Good:

The D-backs struggled early against Anibal Sanchez, but managed to put up a four-spot in the seventh inning.

Miguel Montero and Xavier Nady each hit home runs in the inning.

Bryan Shaw made his Major League debut for the D-backs and tossed a scoreless eighth inning.

Joe Saunders didn’t pitch well, but he made a spectacular play defensively and also had a double.

The Bad:

Esmerling Vasquez, like many of the relievers in the bullpen, continued his struggles giving up a run in the seventh inning.

It was especially deflating as Arizona had just cut the Marlins lead to one run in the top of the inning.

The Ugly:

Joe Saunders had been pitching well lately, but he struggled on the mound throughout the game.

He quickly gave up two runs in the first inning that put Arizona in a hole right out of the gate.

He ended up surrendering five earned runs in six innings of work.

With the D-backs current struggles to score runs in the last week, Saunders didn’t give the team a chance to gain any momentum in the game.
