After initially declaring for the 2020 NBA draft, Arizona State University men’s basketball guard Remy Martin announced he would return to the Sun Devils for his senior season.
He’s hoping to continue improving and gain national recognition that can help him be a draft pick next year.
That name recognition has already started.
Martin was named a Preseason All-American by Stadium reporter Jeff Goodman.
He was one of 20 players to make the team. Goodman wrote:
The Sun Devils are loaded this season, and it’ll be up to Martin to keep everyone happy. He can score, but he’ll need to make sure he takes care of the ball and picks his spots.
Last season, Martin’s 19.1 points per game was second in the Pac-12. His 4.1 assists, 1.5 steals and 2.0 3-pointers and 3.9 free throws per game were also top-10 in the conference.
He was the key piece of an ASU team that looked to be in position to make the NCAA Tournament had March Madness proceeded as planned.
Now a senior, Martin returns to a team that has loaded up on talent. Five-star guard Josh Christopher and four-star forward Marcus Bagley are among the most heralded prospects in team history, and most rotation players from last year are also returning.
That puts the Sun Devils in a good position to win and Martin in position to make noise for himself.
Goodman, who has ASU ranked No. 14 in his preseason rankings, thinks the point guard can do so.
The Preseason Player of the Year on Goodman’s list is Iowa center Luka Garza. Preseason Freshman of the Year is Oklahoma State point guard Cade Cunningham, and Preseason Defensive Player of the Year is Kansas guard Marcus Garrett.
