Arizona Diamondbacks assistant general managers and senior vice presidents Jared Porter and Amiel Sawdaye have interviewed with the Los Angeles Angels for their general manager opening, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.
This is not Sawdaye’s first go-around being linked to open GM jobs, as he’s previously been reported in the mix for the president of baseball operations with the San Francisco Giants in 2019.
Sawdaye just completed his fourth season as a part of general manager Mike Hazen’s front office, coming with the GM from the Boston Red Sox. Sawdaye spent 15 years working for the Red Sox and is part of the scouting team with Porter that drafted a portion of Boston’s young core that helped win a World Series 2018, including All-Star outfielder Mookie Betts.
Porter, like Sawdaye, also has Red Sox roots with Hazen and joined with him in 2017. But Porter went from Boston to spending two years as the Chicago Cubs’ director of professional scouting from 2016-17 before coming to Arizona.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports that some time in the first week of November would mark the completion of the Angels’ first round of interviews, which is slated to include roughly 20 candidates. The organization plans to make a hire sometime before the end of November, per Rosenthal.
