If all goes well on the coronavirus front, the Arizona State Sun Devils will have a chance to rebound from their season-opening loss to the USC Trojans with a late night date on Saturday against the California Golden Bears.
ASU will host Cal in the Week 2 matchup that will be broadcast on ESPN2. Kickoff at Sun Devil Stadium is set for 8:30 p.m. MST.
The game, if it is played as scheduled, would be Cal’s season opener.
The Golden Bears’ originally planned opener against the Washington Huskies on Saturday was canceled by the Pac-12 after a positive coronavirus test. Subsequent contact tracing shut down too many of the Golden Bears, putting the team below the minimum of 53 scholarship players.
ASU head coach Herm Edwards said Monday the Sun Devils are hopeful Cal can get cleared to play by Saturday but acknowledged it remains a fluid situation.
“We’re hopeful. That’s what we’re game-planning for,” Edwards told Arizona Sports’ Doug & Wolf. “Right now … the ball is in the air a little bit and hopefully we learn more this week, but right now we’re scheduled to play them and we’re preparing to play them.”
For Arizona State, Week 2 will be a chance to bounce back from a 28-27 loss to USC, which rallied to win with two touchdowns in the final three minutes of Saturday’s nationally broadcast
morning game.
The Pac-12, which set up a seven-game season, only played four of six games in Week 1 after multiple coronavirus positives for the Utah Utes canceled their game against the Arizona Wildcats.
For Week 2, the conference shifted Utah’s game at UCLA from Friday to Saturday to account for the Utes’ rising positive COVID-19 cases.
