Desert Edge coaches, Gilbert Christian kicker/LB earn Cardinals’ honors

Desert Edge High School coaches Marcus and Mark Carter and senior kicker/linebacker Jace Feely of Gilbert Christian were respectively named the Arizona Cardinals high school coaches and player of the week, the NFL team announced Tuesday.

The Carter twins, who are co-head coaches of the Scorpions, led their team to a 26-23 win over Sunrise Mountain. Desert Edge remains undefeated this season.

Feely is a versatile and highly skilled player for the Knights. He successfully made one 34-yard field goal and kicked all three of his punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line. On defense, Feely had 13 tackles, two sacks, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. The Knights won 45-40 over Eastmark.

Jace Feely is the son of Jay Feely, who an NFL kicker who played for the Arizona Cardinals from 2010-13. He set a number of records with the Cardinals, including being the fourth kicker in 40 years to run for a touchdown, scoring on a fake field goal against the Denver Broncos.

The weekly awards are selected by a local panel of sports figures, including Cardinals defensive lineman Corey Peters, former high school football coach Kelly Epley, former 12 News sports anchor Bruce Cooper, 3TV/CBS 5 sports anchor Tresa Tudrick, high school broadcaster Michael Carotenuto, and Arizona Republic high school writer Richard Obert.

The Carter twins received a plaque and a $1,000 check on behalf of Cardinals Charities in support of the Desert Edge football program on Wednesday.

Feely received a glass trophy on Wednesday.

Desert Edge will face Millennium and Feely’s Gilbert Christian team will play Coolidge Friday.
