Major League Baseball named Brewers first basemen Prince Fielder as the National League captain for the Home Run Derby. If Justin Upton reaches base on Monday when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit Milwaukee, he’ll likely make his case to the captain for spot in competition.
YES , if I am invited to participate in the Home Run Derby I will definitely do it. Would be a dream come true in front of the AZ fans.
D-backs team president Derrick Hall had hinted earlier in the week that Upton would like to take part in the derby as part of the all-star festivities at Chase Field, but this is the first time we’ve heard the right fielder say he has a desire to participate in the event.
We’ve all seen Upton crush opponents’ best pitches during games at Chase Field, including a mammoth shot that disrupted people eating their dinner at Fat Burger in left field, but imagine what he could do when the man throwing to him is hoping he hits it out. Seeing his power on display in one of baseball’s largest events in his home ballpark could be yet another step in his transformation from great prospect to MLB Superstar.
Hopefully Upton can convince Fielder — or whoever is really making the decisions at the MLB offices — to let him into the event. It should be a good thing, just as long as it doesn’t ruin his swing for the rest of the season (right Bobby Abreu?).
