“When fans think about the Fiesta Bowl, they know that some of college football’s most memorable moments happened here in Arizona, and in every decade of our 50-year existence,” Mike Nealy, Fiesta Bowl Organization executive director, said in a press release.
“This 50th anniversary allows us to honor the key players in our successful history and to celebrate all that we have accomplished, on and off the field.”
The organization also announced other ways it plans to celebrate the anniversary, including releasing Top 50 lists to recognize some of the top players, coaches and moments of the game, merchandise with the special logo and a volunteer appreciation event open to everyone who has volunteered in the 50-year history.
Over the past five decades of the bowl game, the Fiesta Bowl has hosted seven National Championship games and 12 Heisman Trophy winners.
The inaugural Fiesta Bowl was held at Sun Devil Stadium on Dec. 27, 1971, where Arizona State defeated Florida State 45–38.
The new logo will be the 50-yard marker at State Farm Stadium during the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl, scheduled for Jan. 2, 2021.
