The Dallas Mavericks selected Arizona wing Josh Green 18th overall in the 2020 NBA Draft on Wednesday.
Green is the first Wildcat off the board in the class. Fellow freshmen Zeke Nnaji and Nico Mannion are expected to go in the first or second round.
Green’s athleticism and ability as a 3-and-D player projects confidence that he can be a rotation player in the league sooner than later. With Arizona, he averaged 12 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 36.1% from behind the arc.
On defense, Green is able to guard multiple positions with his 6-foot-6 height and 6-foot-10 wingspan.
Dallas could use wing depth to complement shooters Tim Hardaway Jr. and Justin Jackson. Green projects to fit well next to star point-forward Luka Doncic and big man Kristaps Porzingis, bringing more shooting, slashing and defensive upside to help a team that already has ball-dominating offensive players.
Green, 20, is from Sydney, Australia, but played high school ball in Arizona at Hillcrest Prep and then at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., before joining the Wildcats.
