Former Phoenix Suns wing Josh Jackson is finalizing a deal with the Detroit Pistons, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Jackson was the Suns’ No. 4 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft. After two underwhelming seasons that included a few off-the-court incidents, Jackson was traded in July of 2019 to the Memphis Grizzlies, along with De’Anthony Melton and two second-round picks. In exchange, the Suns received Jevon Carter and Kyle Korver. Korver was immediately waived, while Carter is a restricted free agent.

Jackson had the fourth-year option declined on his contract, making him an unrestricted free agent. But with Jackson on the books for $7 million, the Suns had to move on from him last offseason in order to open up more cap space to sign point guard Ricky Rubio.

The 23-year-old Jackson started his year in Memphis coming up through the G League. Once he was called up to the NBA roster, Jackson played in 22 games, averaging 9.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game in 17.3 minutes a night. As the Grizzlies fought for a playoff spot in the bubble, Jackson did not crack the team’s rotation.

Teams were legally allowed to begin speaking with free agents at 4 p.m. Friday, when a wave of reported signings come in. Official deals can be signed on 10 a.m. Sunday.
