Former Sun Devil hits HR in Futures Game, D-backs’ Goldschmidt struggles

Jul 11, 2011, 12:59 AM | Updated: 1:05 am

The XM All-Star Futures Game was represented with players from across the globe at Chase Field on Sunday afternoon as the All-Star Game festivities got started but it was local Arizona ties that really got things going.

Arizona Diamondbacks prospect Tyler Skaggs started the game for the U.S. Team and pitched one inning, giving up one hit, walking a batter and striking out one. Skaggs’ day was finished with stranding two runners.

Former Arizona State Sun Devil Jason Kipnis led off the bottom of the first inning with a home run to right field. It was the first run of the game as it put the US Team up 1-0. He went 1-for-2 with the RBI and run scored.

Kipnis is currently in Triple-A playing for the Columbus Clippers of the Cleveland Indians organization.

The U.S. held a 3-0 lead after six innings but the World Team was able to get on the board in the seventh with a four spot. Three runs in the bottom of the eighth were enough to give the U.S. Team a 6-4 win.

Paul Goldschmidt, who has 25 home runs and a .315 batting average for the Diamondbacks’ Double A affiliate, went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. If he continues putting up the offensive numbers he has Diamondbacks fans will be seeing much more of him in the near future and he’ll have many chances to hit a ball out of Chase Field.

The most recognized prospect in the game, Bryce Harper of the Washington Nationals organization, hit just before Goldschmidt and had the same line in the box score as he went hitless in his four at-bats and also struck out twice.
