ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS

Veteran starters on the D-backs’ radar

While much of the talk has been about who the Diamondbacks are looking at to bolster their bullpen, there is some talk about them improving the starting rotation too.

According to Sports 620 KTAR’s John Gambadoro the Diamondbacks are interested in a host of pitchers, including Ricky Nolasco, James Shields, Wandy Rodriguez and Jeremy Guthrie.

Of that group the All-Star Shields would be the most attractive, but also the most expensive. Apparently starters carrying ERAs of 2.33 with a WHIP of 0.98 don’t come cheap. Who knew?

However, the other three might have a lower price tag. As the Marlins slip out of contention and the Astros and Orioles wallow in their divisions’ respective basements, each team could decide it is time to part ways with some of their more high-priced players.

Nolasco, who is still just 28, has a solid track record in Florida while Rodriguez, a lefty from Houston, would be a very intriguing option. Guthrie, who is just 3-12 for the Orioles, has been inconsistent but has good stuff.

While there are plenty of pitchers out there who could help the D-backs, the best ones will obviously come with a higher price tag. How much are the D-backs willing to give up?

The answer to that question will determine who they get.
