When the Arizona Diamondbacks selected UCLA’s Trevor Bauer with the third pick in the 2011 MLB Amateur Draft they knew they were getting a somewhat eccentric lefty with great stuff.
Well, they also got the guy who has been named the best player in college baseball.
Bauer was named the recipient of the 2011 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, given annually to the nation’s top amateur player.
For the season Bauer went 13-2 with a 1.25 ERA in 16 starts. He tallied a Pac-10 single-season record 203 strikeouts, and finished the year with nine consecutive complete games.
