The Arizona Wildcats men’s basketball team will not be taking the court for its scheduled home meeting against the Colorado Buffaloes on Wednesday.
The matchup between the two programs was postponed Tuesday due to positive coronavirus cases in Colorado’s program.
“After consultation with Colorado, the Pac-12 Conference announced the game involving Colorado at Arizona scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 2 has been postponed,” the Pac-12 said in a statement. “This decision was made under the Pac-12’s basketball policy – Colorado does not have the minimum number of scholarship student-athletes available for the game due to previously reported COVID-19 issues within the program and associated contact tracing protocols.
“The Conference will work with both programs to attempt to find a mutually agreeable date to reschedule the contest.”
The postponement marks the third game for the Wildcats that has been affected by COVID-19. It comes after Arizona’s athletics department announced Monday it will no longer allow family members of student athletes or university staff to attend home games for all sports
“Not contesting this game is very disappointing to our student-athletes and our fans,” The Pac-12 added. “While all of us want to see our men’s basketball student-athletes on the court competing, our number one priority must continue to be the health and safety of all those connected to Pac-12 men’s basketball programs.”
Arizona’s season opener on Nov. 25 against Northern Arizona was originally postponed after coronavirus concerns with the Lumberjacks. It has since been rescheduled to Dec. 7.
Last Friday, the Wildcats had to cancel their home contest against UTEP due to a positive test within the Miners’ program.
In the lone game Arizona was able to play, the Wildcats took down Grambling State 74-55.
Barring any other cancellations or postponements, the Wildcats next scheduled game is slated for Dec. 5 against Northern Colorado.
