Gibson keeping options open for starting rotation

PHOENIX – With the decision being made today to send Bary Enright back to Triple-A, the Arizona Diamondbacks are once again looking for someone to be the team’s fifth starter.

With Zach Duke and Micah Owings being the most likely candidates to fill the spot, manager Kirk Gibson isn’t ready to commit to anybody.

“There’s two candidates. We’ll see where we go from here. We’ll take the time to see who best might help us win that game against the Rockies on Sunday,” said Gibson on the Sports 620 KTAR’s Gambo and Ash show on Wednesday.

The team could promote one of its young prospects like Wes Roemer or Wade Miley, but it sounds like the organization is looking to go in a different direction.

The D-backs manager seemed to hint that the team might be looking at potential options outside the organization that would have to be acquired in a trade.

“There’s a lot of rumors going around. We’re always looking to get better,” said Gibson.

Arizona has been linked in the last week to Dodgers starter Hiroki Kuroda and Nationals’ starter Jason Marquis.

Adding either of those two pitchers would be a significant upgrade to the Diamondbacks starting rotation.
